Guest Post: Why Coffee And Espresso Can Be A Healthier Drink Alternative
There is some debate among the fitness community about whether coffee and espresso are ok to drink. Some people say a coffee every day will do less harm than an energy drink, and still give you that boost of energy you need to get through your workout. There have been many studies on coffee, both regular and decaffeinated versions, and some of these studies show that there are benefits.
One benefit is that coffee is somewhat of an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, which could help to reduce the risk of cancer. That’s not to say that coffee could take the place of healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, but this particular benefit of coffee is preferred over other caffeinated drinks such as soda. Coffee itself is a low calorie drink when nothing is added to it. There are many drinks on the market, especially those which you could buy from the grocery or convenience store, which have a high calorie and sugar content. If you choose to add cream to your coffee or espresso, health-conscious people can add low fat steamed milk, and still get the quality taste and consistency they have come to expect.
According to a study by the Harvard Medical School which was published in 2004, the risk for type 2 diabetes is lower for those who drink coffee on a regular basis, compared with those who don’t drink it. The study also indicated that there could be a reduction in gallstone development with coffee consumption, as well as an increase in cognitive function. While moderation in drinking coffee will always be important, experts claim it’s better to spread the consumption of coffee over the course of the day, instead of all at once. This should help you stay alert longer, and also help you avoid that “crash” in the middle of the afternoon.
While the effects of coffee and espresso on a person’s mood are completely subjective, those who drink coffee might say their moods and general well-being are enhanced by doing so. If you’re in a better mood, you’re less likely to be stressed or anxious, which is a healthy way to live. So drink that cup of coffee if you’re able to, and enjoy the advantages. When comparing a cup of coffee to a soda or energy drink, the positive properties of coffee should outweigh the negatives. There are many coffee products out there to choose from, and brewing a fresh cup of coffee or espresso to help you get through that early-morning workout is a wise thing to do.
