Guest Post: Drinking Coffee During Pregnancy: Yes or No?
Some foods and drinks simply do not go together with pregnancy. Alcohol, raw fish (according to some, at least!), and of course cigarettes are out while you are suffering from pregnancy signs and symptoms and growing a baby. But how about coffee? Should you stay away from your favorite espresso while you are expecting a baby?
There have been plenty of studies into the safety of caffeine during pregnancy. The verdict? Most have concluded that drinking more than 200 mg a day of coffee is risky business. Drink more than that, and you double the risk of having a miscarriage. An excess of caffeine reduces blood flow to the placenta, potentially resulting in loss of oxygen and nutrition.
Still, most experts agree that one cup of coffee a day is not dangerous. If you are a coffee lover who just despises the thought of foregoing that early-morning cup to start the day, pregnancy should not prevent you from indulging. You could even have two cups! Just keep in mind that not every cup of coffee contains the same amount of caffeine, and that you should stay under the 200 mg mark to be on the safe side.
Even if you love your coffee, and just can’t imagine waking up without the smell of espresso or cappuccino, your pregnant body may just decide otherwise. I have always been a true coffee addict, but even the thought of drinking a cup could make me vomit during the early months of my pregnancies. Morning sickness and food aversions are all too common during pregnancy, and they may be the body’s way of keeping your unborn baby safe. Coffee is on the list of things a lot of expectant mothers just cannot stand.
Don’t despair, though, as it won’t last forever – my coffee aversion was cured literally as soon as my daughter was born. “Is there anything else I can do for you?”, my homebirth midwife asked after she had done the newborn exam and after-birth cleanup. My answer was: “A double espresso would be swell, thanks!”
